Ontologi - Where Strategy Begins

What is the purpose of your business? Why does it exist?

Is it a playground for you?
Is it a sidewalk theater for you to act important?
Is it simply a way station until you find something better?

Purpose is directional. So let’s look at the direction you’re headed…

If it’s a playground…

It’s the same thing day after day, same games, same fun, until the fun kids grow up and don’t come back.

It’s only effective when it’s sunny and nice out, otherwise very little “play” happens on the playground.

Direction: None. It’s circular, like a merry-go-round. Same every year. Until every else grows out of it.

If it’s a sidewalk theater…

On the crowded summer sidewalks you are the center of your own attention…95% of passerbys either ignore you or chalk you up as another reason they hate the city.

To you, your lines are snappy, but to the few who catch a listen they’re tired and amateurish.

The results of your activity is largely based upon the level of charity from people you don’t know, nor ever will.

Direction: None. Besides. Eventually. Winter.

———

If it’s way station…

People just muddle about without anything particularly important or engaging to do.

Thoughts are about what’s next, not what’s happening now.

Conversation is rare, polite, and predictable.

Only trivialities are accomplished, like a crossword or mentally rehearsing what your going to say when you get to your real destination.

Direction: None. It’s just a pause, a comma, or semicolon in life.

What if it’s all the above?

Pack up, go home, and get the restful sleep you’ve failed to get these last few years. You’re not going anywhere.

Harsh? Yep. Sometimes you need the kick in the pants.

What’s the purpose of your business?

Focus. Find your direction.
