A chain breaks at its weakest link, therefore the ability of a chain to do anything is constrained solely by it’s weakest point.
Keep that in mind…
Let’s say we think of business as a limbo contest. First, let’s say you’ve got a nice potbelly.
You think, “I’m going to be limboing under a bar with this big pot belly? That’s unacceptable, my belly constrains my performance.”
You free up your Friday, go to the plastic surgeon, get the fat sucked out and then show up at the contest. You go for it—how are you going to do?
Well it depends.
If fat a fat belly was your weakest link, then you may do great…but what if it wasn’t?
If it wasn’t your true weakest link is going to stop you before your flat abs ever comes into play.
What if your weakest link was your lack of flexibility? You have to bend your knees and lean back to limbo, right?
———
You want a feel for this? Try this when you get home.
Put scotch tape across a doorway at 3 feet high.
First, try to limbo underneath without bending your knees or leaning back.
No seriously, I know in your head you see it’s ludicrous. But do it. Feel how dumb it is.
Now, grab a T-shirt way too large for you. Put a pillow from your bed underneath.
I don’t care how fat you are now, assume you’re fatter.
Try limboing underneath now, you’re free to bend your knees and lean back.
Do it, and you have the idea of weakest link down.
———
What if focus is your weakest link?
You’ll make improvements here and improvements there, but it seems to have very little impact upon business.
Until this issue is resolved your so called improvement will never be activated, your new svelte belt size will do you no good.
Focus. The new belly looks nice, but you gotta be able to bend your knees.
